What is a Fixed IP SIM?

A Fixed IP SIM, also known as a Static IP SIM, assigns a consistent IP address to your device. This allows it to be accessed remotely at any time without the IP changing.

This is essential for applications where you need to:

  • Remotely access routers and network equipment
  • Connect to CCTV and security systems
  • Manage remote infrastructure
  • Maintain persistent connections to devices

Unlike standard mobile SIMs, which use dynamic IP addressing, a Fixed IP SIM ensures your devices remain accessible in a predictable and controlled way.

A fixed IP SIM ensures the IP address remains the same even when a multi network SIM switches between networks.

Why Private Fixed IP SIM is More Secure

Private fixed IP SIMs reduce exposure to external threats by keeping devices off the public internet. This helps protect against:

  • Unauthorised access attempts
  • Port scanning
  • Automated attacks
  • Vulnerabilities in exposed devices

Access is controlled through a secure connection, ensuring only authorised users can reach the device.

How Fixed IP SIM Enables Remote Access

Devices are not publicly exposed. Instead, users connect via KeySecure VPN, which provides controlled access to devices on the private network. This allows you to:

  • Remotely log into routers and devices
  • Access CCTV and security systems
  • Manage remote networks and infrastructure
  • Maintain secure connections to field equipment

Access can be structured using VPN groups, allowing you to control which users can access specific devices or sets of SIMs — separating different sites, customers or deployments within the same environment.

Fixed IP SIM Use Cases

Fixed IP SIMs are used wherever consistent, secure remote access matters more than just connectivity.

KeySecure Public Access Gateway

KeySecure Public Access Gateway provides secure inbound remote access to IoT devices operating on KeySIM Private Fixed IP SIM cards without requiring a dedicated public IPv4 address for every deployment. By combining enterprise-grade Network Address Translation (NAT), Destination NAT (DNAT) and Port Address Translation (PAT) within the KeySIM mobile core, organisations can securely publish only the services they require while maintaining the security advantages of private IP addressing.

Each IoT SIM continues to operate using a permanently assigned Private Fixed IPv4 address within the KeySIM private mobile core. Instead of exposing the device directly to the public Internet, KeySIM allocates a unique public IPv4 address and either a TCP port or a UDP port. When inbound traffic reaches this public endpoint, it is translated within the KeySIM core and forwarded to the specified private IP address and destination port on the IoT device. Where an application requires both TCP and UDP connectivity, separate forwarding rules are configured for each protocol.

Unlike assigning a dedicated public IPv4 address to every SIM, Public Access Gateway exposes only explicitly authorised services. All other ports remain inaccessible by default, significantly reducing the external attack surface and helping organisations comply with cybersecurity best practices based on the principle of least privilege.

The service is implemented entirely within the KeySIM mobile core and is independent of the serving Radio Access Network (RAN). Whether the IoT SIM is connected via Vodafone, O2, EE or Three, or deployed internationally using roaming agreements, the same public endpoint remains available. Changes in mobile network, radio technology or serving cell site have no impact on the remote access configuration.

For example, an organisation may be assigned the public endpoint 198.51.100.25:45001. Connections received on this address and port can be translated directly to 10.x.x.x:443 on the customer's router, PLC, CCTV recorder, telemetry gateway or industrial controller. To the end user, the process is completely transparent, while the underlying private network remains hidden from public view.

Public Access Gateway is particularly suited to remote management of Teltonika routers, industrial PLCs, RTUs, SCADA systems, CCTV installations, access control equipment, payment terminals, telemetry devices, environmental monitoring systems and other business-critical IoT infrastructure where secure remote administration is required.

By exposing only the required TCP or UDP service through centrally managed DNAT policies, organisations gain predictable remote connectivity without the cost of allocating dedicated public IPv4 addresses to every SIM. Where both protocols are required, separate DNAT rules are configured accordingly. The result is a highly scalable, secure and cost-effective remote access solution for enterprise IoT deployments.

KeySecure VPN

Secure Private VPN Access for KeySIM Private Fixed IP IoT SIM Cards

KeySecure VPN is an enterprise remote access solution that provides secure inbound connectivity to IoT devices operating on KeySIM Private Fixed IP SIM cards. It enables authorised users to communicate directly with remote equipment without requiring each device to have its own public IPv4 address.

Every KeySIM configured for the KeySecure service is allocated a permanently assigned Private Fixed IPv4 address within the KeySIM private mobile core. These addresses are not publicly routable, meaning they cannot be reached directly from the internet. Instead, authorised users establish a secure VPN connection into the KeySecure platform, where they are granted private routed access to the devices they have permission to manage.

This architecture provides the convenience of remote access while significantly reducing the exposure associated with publicly accessible IP addresses.

Why Use KeySecure VPN?

Traditional mobile broadband connections are designed primarily for outbound internet access. Inbound connections are often impossible because devices operate behind carrier-grade NAT or dynamic IP addressing, making direct remote management difficult or impossible.

KeySecure VPN solves this problem by creating a secure private network between authorised users and KeySIM-connected devices.

Benefits include:

  • Secure private remote access from anywhere with an internet connection.
  • No requirement for every device to have its own public IPv4 address.
  • Permanently assigned Private Fixed IPv4 addresses.
  • Direct communication with remote IoT devices.
  • Reduced exposure to unsolicited internet traffic.
  • Scalable architecture suitable for individual installations or nationwide deployments.

Direct Private Network Connectivity

Unlike traditional public port forwarding, KeySecure VPN provides private Layer 3 network connectivity.

Once connected to the VPN, authorised users communicate directly with the remote device's Private Fixed IP address. Any TCP or UDP service running on that device can be accessed, subject to the customer's own network configuration.

This allows engineers to manage remote equipment exactly as though it were connected to their own private network.

Typical applications include:

  • Router administration
  • CCTV systems
  • Building Management Systems (BMS)
  • PLCs
  • RTUs
  • SCADA infrastructure
  • Telemetry gateways
  • Industrial automation
  • Environmental monitoring
  • Remote diagnostics and maintenance

VPN Access Groups

Not every user requires access to every device. KeySecure VPN supports flexible access groups, allowing organisations to define exactly which Private Fixed IP addresses are accessible through each VPN connection. For example:

Full Administrative Access

An internal IT department or engineering team can be granted access to every KeySIM within the organisation.

Regional Engineering Teams

Large organisations can create separate VPN groups for engineers responsible for different geographical regions, ensuring each team only accesses the equipment relevant to them.

Customer Separation

Managed service providers can securely separate multiple customers, ensuring each customer only has access to their own deployed devices.

Department-Based Access

Separate VPN groups can be created for different operational teams, such as:

  • CCTV engineers
  • Network engineers
  • Facilities management
  • Building Management Systems
  • Industrial automation
  • Third-party maintenance contractors

This provides granular access control across large IoT deployments.

Flexible Deployment

KeySecure VPN is suitable for both individual users and enterprise environments. VPN connections can be established from:

  • Windows computers
  • macOS devices
  • Smartphones and tablets
  • Corporate servers
  • Enterprise firewalls
  • Compatible VPN routers
Many organisations choose to terminate the VPN on their office firewall or router, allowing authorised users within the corporate network to communicate with remote KeySIM devices without requiring individual VPN software on every workstation.

Integration with KeySecure Public Access Gateway

KeySecure VPN can also be used alongside the KeySecure Public Access Gateway. The two services are designed for different requirements.

KeySecure VPN is intended for authorised users who require private network connectivity to remote devices. It provides direct access to the Private Fixed IP addresses allocated to KeySIMs and is typically used by engineers, administrators and technical support teams.

In some situations, however, it may not be practical for an end user to establish a VPN connection. They may simply require access to a web interface or application running on a remote device without needing VPN software or private network connectivity.

In these cases, KeySecure Public Access Gateway can publish a specific public IPv4 address and TCP or UDP port combination. Connections received on this public endpoint are translated within the KeySIM mobile core and forwarded directly to the required private IP address and destination port.

This allows organisations to provide simple public access to a specific application or service while continuing to keep the device itself operating on a Private Fixed IP address within the KeySIM network.

For example, an engineering team may use KeySecure VPN for complete remote administration of a router, while an end user is provided with a public web link that connects only to the router's HTTPS management interface or to a Building Management System dashboard.

Fixed IP SIM — Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about fixed IP SIM cards and secure remote access.

A Fixed IP SIM, also known as a Static IP SIM, assigns a consistent IP address to your device so it can be accessed remotely at any time without the IP changing. Unlike standard mobile SIMs that use dynamic IP addressing, a Fixed IP SIM ensures your devices remain accessible in a predictable and controlled way.

A private fixed IP SIM places devices on a private network, not directly accessible from the public internet, and accessed securely via VPN. A public fixed IP SIM exposes devices directly on the public internet via their IP address. For most business and IoT deployments, private fixed IP is the recommended option due to significantly higher security.

With a private fixed IP SIM, devices are not publicly exposed. Users connect via KeySecure VPN, which provides controlled access to devices on the private network. Access can be structured using VPN groups, allowing you to control which users can reach specific devices or deployments — separating sites, customers or project types within the same environment.

Fixed IP SIMs are commonly used for CCTV and surveillance systems, alarm systems and security infrastructure, remote router management, industrial equipment monitoring, digital signage, EPOS and payment systems, and remote IT infrastructure — any deployment where secure, consistent remote access is required.

Private fixed IP SIMs keep devices off the public internet, reducing exposure to unauthorised access attempts, port scanning, automated attacks and vulnerabilities in exposed devices. Access is controlled through a secure VPN connection, ensuring only authorised users can reach the device.
